Context<\/h2>

CCEA maintains a national Conservation Areas Reporting and Tracking System (CARTS), which uses the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) protected area definition and categories as standards for jurisdictional reporting to CARTS. Adherence to an internationally recognized standard allows CARTS data to be used for inter-jurisdictional comparisons, for national status reporting, and for inclusion in global protected areas reporting systems.<\/p>

CCEA has recently prepared, with the assistance of its Jurisdictional Representatives, an overview of the extent to which and mechanisms by which protected areas in Canada are protected from subsurface resource exploration and development.<\/p>

Objectives<\/h2>

The objectives of this workshop are to:<\/p>

  1. \u00a0present the results of CCEA\u2019s cross-Canada survey on protected areas and subsurface rights;<\/li>
  2. review the mechanisms and strategies which appear to give the most effective protection from subsurface resource exploration and development and discuss their potential wider applicability to state, private, and other types of protected areas;<\/li>
  3. develop recommendations for minimum standards with respect to protection from subsurface resource exploration and development for areas being reported in CARTS to ensure consistency with IUCN guidance; and<\/li>
  4. develop recommendations for best practices for achieving these minimum standards, based in part on examples from jurisdictions that have successfully met them.<\/li><\/ol>

    As always, CCEA workshops and conferences provide the opportunity establish and build connections among the network of conservation specialists from Canadian organizations responsible for terrestrial and marine protected areas. The final day of the workshop will be devoted to jurisdictional reporting and a round-table, allowing practitioners to share progress, knowledge, and experiences with each other.<\/p>
