The Canadian Council of Ecological Areas Board of Directors would like to congratulate one of its own on receiving a prestigious recognition by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). 

On Wednesday, March 17, 2021, CCEA Co-Chair David (Dave) MacKinnon received the IUCN WCPA Fred M. Packard International Award.  

The event was held online as the awards ceremony took place virtually for the first time, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of the Vital Sites online event series of IUCN. This year’s ceremony honoured nine outstanding individuals in recognition of their contributions to conservation.

THE FRED M. PACKARD INTERNATIONAL PARKS MERIT AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE IN FURTHERING THE OBJECTIVES OF PROTECTED AREAS FOR SOCIETY

 

In recognition of  his lifelong commitment to nature conservation and protected areas in Nova Scotia, Canada and beyond.

Through his role with Nova Scotia’s protected areas program, Dave continues to work diligently and unwaveringly toward the protection of ecologically important areas.

Dave has created a lasting legacy beyond his work with government having co-led the formation of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust more than 25 years ago. His contribution to the work of the Trust has resulted in protection for thousands of hectares of private land.

Among his many achievement with the Nova Scotia Government, Dave helped establish the Crown Share Land Legacy Trust and played a major role in selecting and securing extensive new public lands for conservation in Nova Scotia.

For nearly 15 years Dave has contributed to the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas and most recently in the definition and recognition of « other effective area-based conservation measures » in Canada and beyond.

The award was presented to him by Kathy MacKinnon, Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, and Trevor Sandwith, Director of the IUCN Global Protected Areas Program.
